Here is what may be my favourite of all my Ceramics I projects: My Raku fired sleeping dragon.

Raku firing is an AMAZING process, where you fire the clay in an outdoor kiln, with special glazes, and when the clay is orange hot, you pull it from the kiln with tongs, and place it in a trashcan filled with dry leaves and paper. The heat of the clay sets them on fire, and you let it burn down. Any part of the project that wasn't glazed is burned black.

I made a scarab, a small model of of an Atlantis-style city, and this guy. (I'll post the others later)

This little guy fits in my two cupped palms, and is fairly light. He was done with "gold", "sweet rust", and "crackle white" raku glazes. I also used H435 clay, which is a finer grain clay used mostly for pottery.

Made entirely by hand, no molds or references used.

I LOVE raku firing. I'm one of the "advanced" students in my school's art department and I get to watch and load our Raku kiln when we do Raku Day. It is so much fun, and I love the colors you can get from it.

This is an AMAZING sculpted piece. I love it. :D

Raku is amazing, last semester I was helping to lift the cover as well as lift pieces out with the tongs, it was so much fun.

Being advanced has it's privileges!

And thanks!! <3

This is AMAZING! I love the egg?/rock around it and how you used the crackle white, and of course the colors on the dragon, especially on the wing!

Thank you! It is an egg, and I was delighted with how the crackle worked. The wing was actually just a little luster tone slapped on that burnt to that gold.
